❑ Verizon Business will deploy and manage a secure global IP network linking thousands of US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sites under a Networx Universal task order awarded by the agency. Through an agreement valued at $678.5 million over 10 years, Verizon Business will serve as primary service provider under the muchanticipated DHS Onenet programme, providing managed IP and security services that support DHS’ mission of securing the nation. Under terms of the agreement, Verizon Business will help the 22 agencies making up DHS combine multiple separate wide-area networks onto one common and secure IP network.
❑ Cisco has introduced two new environments for virtual communications: a personal Cisco Telepresence system for use in individual offices and a large Cisco Telepresence room ideal for group training and cross-functional team meetings. Cisco Telepresence integrates advanced audio, high-definition video and interactive elements with the power of the underlying network to deliver an immersive meeting experience.
❑ Geo, a provider of dedicated fibre networks, has announced the signing of a 10-year contract worth £845,000 with carrier-neutral data centre, Bluesquare, to provide it with a dedicated fibre connection from its Maidenhead site to a data centre in Buckinghamshire. Geo will provide 116km of dedicated fibre from Bluesquare’s existing Maidenhead data centre to a recently established data centre.
❑ KDDI has announced the expansion of its KDDI Global Powered Ethernet service, a service
which provides support for international data communications services for corporate customers, to include the UK. Launched in the US in September 2006, the service has also been made available in Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea and China. KDDI has expanded to 12 points in eight countries in Europe, including UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Russia and
Switzerland.
